Japanese-American

Several days ago, I saw a TV program on NHK BS about Japanese Kiyotaro Osaki who immigrated to Hawaii from Japan 100 years ago.

At that time it was a general system an immigrant and a bride from Japan were an arranged marriage by a picture called picture bride.

One of his sons as a Japanese soldier and the other one of son as an American soldier fought each other in the Second World War, and he got his farm with great difficulty, then I couldn’t stop shedding tears.

Japanese-American people who is living in America now have such history.

Our English teacher of the culture center is 4th generation Japanese-American, so I thought he also might have family's roots like that.

 It was the good TV program.

数日前、NHK BSで100年前に日本からハワイへ移住した日本人 尾崎喜代太郎さんについての番組を見ました。「ジイチャンが生きたアメリカ〜日系人・尾崎家の100年」

 当時は、写真だけのお見合いで、一度も会うことなく日本から花嫁を迎える結婚のスタイル、写真花嫁が一般的だったそう。

第二次世界大戦において、2人の我が息子が1人は日本兵として、もう1人はアメリカ兵として、互いに敵国として戦うことになってしまったこと、苦労して自分の農場を手に入れたこと、その苦難の人生を思うと涙が出て止まらなかった。

今、アメリカで生きている日系アメリカ人の方達にはそんな歴史があるんですよね。

カルチャーセンターでの英語クラスの先生が日系アメリカ人4世なので、きっと彼にもそんなルーツがあるのかも、と思ってしまいました。

いい番組だったなぁ。
